Canton: A mill town with much to offer

Canton is located in the eastern part of Haywood County and is the home of the Evergreen Packaging pulp paper mill, which employs about 1,600 and produces specialty papers as well as the waxed cardboard used in gable-top milk and juice containers.
With a land area of 3.8 square miles and a population of 4,029, the small town has a lot to offer individuals or families wishing to relocate.
A scenic walking trail winds along the Pigeon River, which flows through Canton, and the town’s outdoor swimming pool and recreation park are sited along the river. The history of the area is offered at the town’s museum, and events are scheduled throughout the year at the Colonial Theater and Old 30th Signal Armory.
The recreation park has a playground, picnic tables, lighted tennis courts and entertainment stage for the summer Pickin’ in the Park, featuring local musicians and dancers. A sports complex located near Interstate 40 provides ball fields for games and tournaments.
Canton is also within easy access of several fine golf courses. Hiking and nature trails, camping and excellent trout and bass fishing, are available nearby, as well as the nation‚s two most visited national parks: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Businesses or industries looking to relocate to Canton will find two existing industrial parks and incentive packages, which are negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Local officials will assist companies looking to relocate with issues of needed property, to setting up training or retraining of a workforce through Haywood Community College.

Fun Facts about Canton
•The town was named after a bridge built with steel from Canton, Ohio. The town’s name was stamped on the steel and town leaders at the time thought it would be a good name.
•The Hominy Gap, which runs through town, is the lowest point between the French Broad and Pigeon rivers.
•Revolutionary War Gen. Griffith Rutherford camped in Canton on his way to fight the Cherokee Indians.
•Former North Carolina Governor Dan Moore was from Canton. He lived on Pennsylvania Avenue, across from the library and was a lawyer for Champion before becoming governor.
